Hello,
My name is Michel I’m 14 years old, my birthday is at the 23th of December. I’m born in Tilburg in the Netherlands. My hobbies are hanging around with friends, gaming, reading Donald Ducks and making YouTube videos. One of my other hobbies is playing hockey. I play hockey in the B1 of Were Di Tilburg, I play hockey since I'm 6 years old. I always go to Willem II, that is the local soccer team here. I have a season pass, so I can visit every match if I want to. I live in a house with my mom, dad and my younger brother. When I make YouTube videos I like to add special effects, music, funny noises and visual effects. With effects you could think of an error message or a banana peeling itself in the background. This was my introduction, bye. |
Hello,
My name is Isabelle Swaans and I’m thirteen years old. I live in the Netherlands, in the city Tilburg. I live in a house with my mother (41 years old), my stepfather (41 years old), my brother (15 years old) and my little sister (4 years old). My parents are divorced. One day a week I go to my father. I only have one pet, a dog, she is called: Sammie. It’s is a really nice dog. She is only a few months old. My hobbies are playing hockey, I really like to do that. I play hockey at a club called Hockey Club Tilburg, it's also called HC Tilburg. Two days a week I have hockey training and on Saturday I play a hockey match. From December to March we play hockey in a hall. I also like to go shopping. The school where I go to is called the Beatrix College. At this school I do TTA. At TTA you get most of the lessons in English. The primary school, where I went to a few years ago, is called the Jan Ligthart School Driecant. |

Hello,
My name is Simon. I'm thirteen years old and I live in the Netherlands. My hobby is playing soccer. I’m a center fullback in the first team of SV Reeshof in the under fourteen age class. Another hobby I have is playing games on my PlayStation 4. I love the game FIFA 17. It is a game in wich you play football. The football club I support is Willem II. I have a season ticket, which means that I can visit every home match in the stadium of Willem II. I do a bilingual education. Almost all lessons, with the exception of other languages, are taught in English. After school I hang out with my friends. A less nice thing is that I also have to do homework. The holiday I liked the most was when we went to the United States of America. I visited my grandparents and my aunt. I swam a lot. This was some information about myself. I hope you enjoyed it! |
Hello,

I’m doing bilingual education at the Beatrix College. Bilingual education means that most of our lessons are taught in English. I’m in the second year now and my favorite subjects are art and mathematics. My hobbies are drawing, reading and gaming. I like drawing the most and I do it a lot. My favorite game is Minecraft. I don’t have a favorite book, because I like the most books I’ve read equally. I also watch a lot of Netflix and my favorite series is Doctor Who. My favourite food is spaghetti and French fries. |
What do we expect to find?
We expect to find mostly methods about how to save energy statics how our school is currently using energy. We also think we will find a lot of information on how to save energy and the advantages of using green energy. We think we will find out that our school can improve a lot on the area of saving energy, because in daily school life we don’t see a lot of measures to save energy. Probaly we will also find a lot of information we don't need and we will have to filter all the information for the things we actually can use. Either way we expect to find a lot of interesting and educational information about our topic and we will be a little wiser.
Reading Research
Use of solar panels
If we use solar panels we will become more sustainable, we will use less electricity from the suplier produce it our own. We use solar panels, so we don't have to worry about if it's sustainable, because it's generated by the sun. So by investing in solar power on their large estates, schools can save money: 50kW solar panels will cost around 8000 pounds per year through payment from energy supliers and savings on in-house electricity bills. Multiply this by the 30,000 schools in the UK and we're looking at a total annual income of 240 pounds just think what schools could do with that extra cash: libraries, playgrounds, field trips or the salaries of more than 6,000 teachers.
Heaters
You can save energy by putting out the heater. This is because, the heaters need a lot of electricity. You can also save energy by buying another more sustainable heater. You could switch to a conventional fuel like gas. Gas costs around £2,300 plus the cost of the radiators, by this you cut the cost of your heating bill by nearly half and save about £340 a year. So, if you put out the heater it will become colder but you will save a lot of energy and money.
Light
There are a lot of light sources that use a lot of energy. One problem is the toilet lights for example. Also things as candy machines use a lot of energy and mostly aren’t shut off when the school closes. The problem of the toilets can you solve by putting an presence detector in the toilets so the lights only turn on when there’s actually someone in the toilet. Also the candy machine problem can be solved by installing a time clock on the electricity so it shuts off automatically when the school closes.
P.E halls
In the P.E. (Physical Education) halls you can also save energy. Mostly there are heaters which use a lot of energy (see paragraph Heaters), in places where you really need them in P.E. halls they’re just a waste of energy. In the P.E. hall you are mostly sporting, so you warm up yourself and therefore you don’t need heaters. The other way around when you're overheat you can open the doors or just sport outside.
No printers anymore
Printers use a lot of electricity. Many people on our school use the printer to print things at school and they aren’t always used correctly which is a waste of paper. If you take away the printers everybody has to print at home. If the printer is gone you will save a lot of energy.
Conclusion reading research
The conclusion is that there are a lot of things to save energy at school. The thing is that we don’t do enough for it. For example the solar pennals are a bit expensive but after a few years you do have profit of it and it is really sustainable. There are really a lot of ways to save energy at school, but we don’t use them. It should be much better if we did do that. Not only to safe enery but also for a better, sustainable future!

Results of the servey
Explanation of the graphs
1. The most people wo took the servey were woman.
2. The most people were above the 10 but there was also a big part older than 40 and only a small part of the people was between the 20thy en the 40th
3. Most people prefered that the heaters were on the whole winter and only a few thought it should only be on when it is really cold. You can see that the most people are used to have the heaters always on.
4. The most people thought that it would be good for the climate to use solar panels as energy source.
5. No, was the answer that was given the most, because the most people agree that this is a waste of energy.
6. Even if the most people thought that the heaters should be on at school, they disagree that the heaters should be on in the sporthall.
7. The most people think the computers in school use to much power.
8. The people were divided about this question. about 50% said that 18-20 degrees was the ideal temperature, while the others said 20-22.
9. The most people prefer to be cooled down in the summer, so they said that the school should buy an airco.
10. A lot of people said that teachers indeed had to promote a sustainable climate.

- I think that the heater should only be on when it's really cold outside.
- I think that is the best thing to do.
- No, that is a real waste of energy.
- No, of course not. If you are sporting you get automatically warm, right?

- No, I don’t think that’s a good idea.
- Yes, because the teachers also need light. I have heard that they sometimes have to work more.
- Yes, because sometimes you do something which is less active.
- Yes, there are namely many computers at schools.
- I think the ideal temperature at school should be around 20 degrees.

- Circa 20 degrees celcius.
- Yes, otherwise it will become too warm. Children can’t concentrate when it’s too warm.
- Yes, because that’s better for the environment.
Conclusion
While working on this project we learned a lot about saving energy. For example, that saving energy on school is sometimes pretty difficult since a lot of people are used to the comfort of for example: heaters, having computers and other stuff that waste a lot of energy. The most effective ways to save energy at school are to: only leave the lights on when needed, to not make use of heating too much and by letting the school run partly or if possible let all of it run on green energy. In the beginning we actually thought we would find a lot of articles and information we would never use, but nothing was less true. We found a lot of useful information we also could use at our own school.
Reflection
Michel
I think that the content we delivered was very good. We learned new ways to save energy at school, for example keep the heaters off during winter and banning licht switches. Also we learned that people have different meanings about saving energy. overal I think that Leah, Isabelle and I did most of the work. Simon was more wandering around every lesson and playing on his phone. I think I had a good study attitude, but sometimes I was more concentrated than other times. But overal me and my group did an excellent job I think!
Leah
I think I did my part of the work sufficiently and that we almost divided all work equally. We had most of the work done in time and we actually learned a lot about our topic. We mostly did our tasks in the lessons but also some of them at home. The most computer work was done by Michel and Isabelle checked the spelling and grammar and wrote a lot of text. I mostly wrote text or helped others with what to write, I also did the interview on video. Simon did most of his work at home and also wrote some pieces of text. I think we worked together pretty well.
Simon
I think that we worked well. A thing I do have to say is that my group did a bit more work than me. The subject we had: Saving energy at school, I did not like very much. For the rest it was an okay project to do. It was also very apart to see that we don’t do a lot for saving energy at school.
Isabelle
I think it went quite well. We really worked together and that went well too. Sometimes some of us didn’t know what to do, but then we gave this person a task to do and that helped. I think I did enough, but I also had some moments I didn’t really know what to do, so I asked it. In my opinion we made a really good site with lots of information. We also put everything in what had to be in. I really learned a lot, so that’s really good. First I thought it wouldn’t be that difficult, but actually it was quite difficult. But we all did it right.
